Brazilian playmaker Kaka is on his way to Real Madrid for a reported transfer fee of around 95.5 million dollars.

If confirmed, it would be soccer’s second biggest transfer fee after that of French legend Zinedine Zidane, who cost Real Madrid more than 100 million dollars eight years ago.

The 27-year-old, who is currently in Brazil with the national squad, signed a six year contract with the Spanish giants, ending weeks of speculation over his future.

At a news conference, Kaka told reporters he would have preferred to remain at AC Milan, but understood that financial worries had forced the Italian club to sell him.

“I was told that the best way I could help the club was by accepting the transfer.”

The Brazilian international becomes the first player to join Real since Florentino Perez returned to the club’s presidency this month.

The race for Kaka’s signature intensified earlier this month after AC Milan coach, Carlo Ancelotti, left for Chelsea, fuelling speculation that the midfielder would follow his old boss to Stamford Bridge.

Real Madrid will be looking for a big return on their investment having lost out this season to rivals Barcelona, who became the first Spanish club to win football’s three major trophies in a season.

It’s a month before the biggest single event in world sport, but some of the biggest names in the game won’t be there.

Al Jazeera’s Gabriel Elizondo reports from Rio de Janeiro, where Brazil’s coach has named his squad for the football World Cup in South Africa. Several superstars, including Ronaldinho and Adriano, missed the cut. 18-year old rising star “Neymar” was also left off the 23-player roster.
