Has it been a worldwide event for decades? How old is football in general? It seems there is a huge following for world cup football, but it’s not that big in the USA, are we missing something?
International play in soccer has existed since 1872, however the first World Cup was not played until 1930. It was hosted by Uruguay and they were featured in the finals, beating out Argentina 4-2 in front of their home supporters. Since then the World Cup has been held every 4 years, with the exceptions of 1942 and 1946, due to WWII. The idea of a separate soccer tournament rose from the Olympics, where before the World Cup existed, was the greatest stage for the sport. FIFA was founded in 1904, but had many challenges in putting together a tournament of such magnitude early on. Because the Olympic tournament would only allow for amateur players, other venues starting appearing all over Europe with larger aspirations. As soccer was growing in popularity all over Europe, and using the success of the Olympics as a pedestal, FIFA took it upon themselves to organize an international tournament for professional athletes. And that’s how the World Cup was born. This year, the 2010 World Cup is being host by South Africa. I’m been checking out all the action by streaming games from my computer. Take this opportunity to watch the world’s greatest sporting event.

I know it sounds stupid, but North Korea is a communist country and they don’t allow people to leave. So, how are the North Korean soccer players participating in the world cup?
I wasn’t taught this in school. I just know. And plus, it’s not a matter of believing rumors and the media; N Korea not letting it’s people leave is the truth.
And yeah, thanks for clarifying the process of boarding a plane. It was really helpful.
Everything is only for political purposes including soccer. Kim Jung Il allows them to leave to represent their country but the people are not informed and the game is not screened in N. Korea, highlights are only shown if they win. That is another reason why they only have 27 supporters with them – their family members or close relatives.

Alot of the time it seems like minor injuries, but what does a team do when they lose great players? It seems like there have been many injuries so far. What was the world world cup ever in terms of injuries?
I bet this question was asked after finding out about Didier Drogba! Drogba is the star of Ivory Coast’s national soccer team and he is one of the best strikers in the game today. And as he’s African he has drawn himself a lot of attention at the 2010 World Cup, even despite the fact that he was injured. He was questionable for today’s game, but the spirit of a nation was behind him. He played pretty well seeing how it was his first game back. Holding Portugal to no goals is not an easy feat.
African supporters are hoping for a speedy recovery, he fractured his elbow in a friendly against Japan on June 4th. Soccer is an extremely passionate game, that’s why when players get tackled they usually try to “sell” the call by overreacting and protesting to the referee in an overly-dramatic fashion. Those who aren’t especially familiar with the game of soccer might think that because of these antics, players get hurt all the time. But actually it’s quite the opposite. It is very rare to see soccer players get hurt. The most common cause of injury is due to elongated periods of play. Players on strong club teams play upwards of 40 games a year, and this does not include international play, which can up the amount of games played significantly. The soccer season is almost endless, players play all year round. When fatigue sets in, this leads to injury. I can’t wait to stream the Ivory Coast game on June 20th now knowing that Drogba is back in the lineup!

I don’t know much about the refs in the world cup, but one would think that they have to ref several games dealing with several languages. Is there a common language that everybody understands, or do they rely on non-verbal cues?
They have to speak English, even between each other so everybody can understand. They can give some explanations for instance if the referee speaks the language of a team but that’s all.
